17 Pygmies Launch PledgeMusic Campaign
Cult With No Name join Olympus Music Partners
July 2012
‘Post-punk electronic balladeers’ Cult With No Name, comprise the East London duo of Erik Stein and Jon Boux. Having been the first international signing to L.A. label Trakwerx in 2007 (founded by Jackson Del Rey of Californian punk legends Savage Republic), Cult With No Name released their fifth album, ‘Above as Below’ this year. Undoubtedly strongest album to date, ‘Above as Below’ has an illustrious supporting cast, including extensive contributions from Kelli Ali (Sneaker Pimps), John Ellis (Stranglers, Peter Gabriel, Peter Hammill), Luc van Lieshout and Bruce Geduldig (Tuxedomoon), and Meg Maryatt (17 Pygmies). It’s also packaged in a fold-out sleeve, designed by world-renowned graphic designer Jonathan Barnbrook (David Bowie and Damien Hirst). The duo are no strangers to technology in music creation, and so when Olympus launched its LS Range of music recorders, the boys helped to put it to the test. Essentially a mobile sound studio, the LS products record 24bit / 96kHz PCM audio (better than CD quality) making them the ideal companion for musicians. Pocket sized, the range includes the LS-20 which also films HD movies plus the new LS-100 which also works as a multi track. Directed by John Leigh (aka ‘Karborn’), Cult With No Name produced their latest music video using only the HD audio and HD film capabilities of the LS-20. The video is now launched and is available to view via You Tube Cult With No Name are the latest of many talented musicians to be chosen by Olympus to test the LS products to create a series of unique music videos. Bliss/Aquamarine reviews CI: Celestina and CII: Second Son.
17 PYGMIES Celestina CD (Trakwerx)
17 PYGMIES CII: Second Son CD (Trakwerx)
Earlier this issue I reviewed CIII: Even Celestina Gets the Blues, the third part in 17 Pygmies' sci-fi concept album trilogy. Since then I have received the first two parts, both of which come with the same elaborate handmade packaging. The first CD, Celestina, starts with Celestina I, an instrumental that combines spacerock, psych and Middle Eastern tinged melodic motifs. Celestina II is part post-rock, part dreampop, part film soundtrack style music. Celestina III combines relaxing synth sounds with grandiose neoclassical music. Celestina IV is a hypnotic blend of spacerock and shoegaze. Celestina V is a drone/improvisation/psych-rock piece with minimalistic wordless vocals. Celestina VIII combines ferocious, metalish guitar noise with experimental and ethereal aspects. Celestina X is an experimental, spacey ambient track that gradually develops into a vintage sci-fi soundtrack style piece with dark and ominous sounding synth. The album ends with Celestina XI, an atmospheric psychedelic instrumental that incorporates a section inspired by Spanish folk music.
The second instalment of the trilogy, Second Son, includes eleven tracks, taking in aspects of neoclassical music, experimental music, spacerock, classy and serious pop music, prog, and film score inspired music. It's a sophisticated, well-crafted sound that shows the musicians' considerable talent. This band have a very creative, artistic approach, bringing all manner of disparate genres together into one coherent whole. Their music is very much recommended to anyone open minded about music.
