The JangleBox reviews "Above As Below" by Cult With No Name

The JangleBox reviews

Cult with no Name: Above as below (2012)

“After a year which saw them being nominated for the prestigious Exposure Music Awards, London’s acclaimed post-punk electronic balladeers Cult With No Name return with their fifth and undoubtedly strongest album to date.
Above as Below showcases the duo at their lightest, darkest, most melodic, sardonic, nonchalant, bon vivant, serious and humorous. 14 tracks that span everything from pure synth-pop (‘What’s Certain’), to sweeping piano-led chanson (‘Maitre D-Day’), swirling trip-hop (‘Hope is Existence’), Black-American spirituals (‘Shake Hands with the Devil’), and stark spoken word (‘Losing my Elan’). Lyrical perspectives include everything from the frustration of life as a P.A. to an African dictator (‘Idi’s Admin’), to attacking holocaust revisionism (‘Numbers’).
Above as Below’s musical dexterity provides the backdrop to an illustrious supporting cast, including extensive contributions from Kelli Ali (Sneaker Pimps), Luc van Lieshout and Bruce Geduldig (Tuxedomoon), John Ellis (Stranglers, Peter Gabriel, Peter Hammill), and Meg Maryatt (17 Pygmies). Packaged in a deluxe fold-out letter-pressed sleeve, designed by world-renowned graphic designer Jonathan Barnbrook (David Bowie and Damien Hirst), Above as Below not only represents the pinnacle of CWNN’s achievements, but stands alone as an innovative, addictive and enduring song-cycle” (Press)

PLASTELIN reviews "Above As Below" by Cult With No Name

Serbia's Plastelin posts a review of the stunning new album by Cult With No Name "Above As Below"

Cult With No Name - Above As Below (Trakwerx, 2012)

ImageThe release date of Cult With No Name's fifth release Above as Below (01/01/2012) could somehow be considered symbolic. It's certainly a great way to start the year for the band's fans and followers. For not only are CWNN one of a kind - how many otherpost-punk electronic balladeers can you name? - but because they are true krafstmen (sic), a band that never cheat nor allow themselves to be cheated. Already people like Brett Anderson (Suede), John Foxx are recognising CWNN's solid songwriting, and for Above as Below the band call on the skills of a number of respectful guests; Tuxedomoon's Bruce Geduldig and Luc van Lieshout, John Ellis ofStranglers' and Peter Gabriel fame, Meg Maryatt from labelmates 17 Pygmies and Kelli Ali once of the Sneaker Pimps.

Above as Below continues to softly define CWNN's sound, with a combination of recognisable atmospheres alongside newly inducted shades and styles. Always seductively elegant and more intriguing with every passing tone, the production is one that is precise, where nothing is either leftover nor intrusive. The result is a splendid pop travelogue, which in some places offers a quite spectacular and colourful view. We are privileged to meet Howard Devoto in some European metropolis in search of urban twilight, Eno and Bowie walking past in headphones, a nostalgic Colin Newmanchatting to a relaxed Stranglers, backed by deconstructed trip hop, and ambientintermezzos with a touch of neoclassicism and a chamber mood.

On the basis of this album, CWNN needn't worry about being marginalised with the passage of time. Sure, there are some huge bands that know how to tickle the sentiments of the populus, but it's the lesser known bands like Cult With No Name that are the real ingredients keeping popular music alive and inspiring. Cults are there to be rediscovered, reinvented and redefined, and this one is for long contemplation.

This was a fun read for us.

Music Waves Reviews "CIII: Even Celestina Gets The Blues" by 17 Pygmies

Music Waves, a cool rock and metal webzine, has posted a review of "CIII: Even Celestina Gets The Blues (A Tale of Love and Quantum Physics)

Loose English translation:

Rating: 6.0/10 | Zen ... Such is the immediate impression that emerges from the latest installment of 17 Pygmies, final installment of the trilogy that began in 2008. Evidence that the group continues along the same lines, the titles are soberly titled "Celestina", followed by a single number continuing the series. If the group has already shown productions evoking not only the greatest dynamism, the subtitle of this album, "Celestina III", will revive fears of listeners in search of muscular music: "Even Get The Celestina blues "do not let consider a festive music, and the complement of the subtitle" A tale of love and quantum physics "end the listener to dive into distrust.
Yet the product is carefully packed, and the result, according to the specifications: 17 Pygmies continue to serve us an atmospheric music, not really as progressive based on simple structures, but exuding a relaxing atmosphere quite accomplished. To do this, he uses a recipe, almost always the same (and this is the main limitation of the album):'re taking slow rhythms (the metronome wisely remain confined to the largo or adagio, except onrelatively rough No. 29), preferably on a waltz (ten out of twelve titles are on a 3/4), use of aerial sounds for keyboards (lots of sounds reminiscent of the Celesta, some Vangelis sounds reminiscent of the 80s : No. 28), parsemons silent or electronic suspension to more mysterious, and confide in a soft voice to female voice (Meg Maryatt, very well in its register). So that after two titles, all surprise disappears completely, barely disturbed by the addition of strings (No. 30 and 31) or male-female duet (No. 30).
In this construction cleverly implemented, both the instrumental are often minimal (normal for the Pygmies, you say!), Which fits perfectly with the zen. Here, nothing beyond, you will not hear a breath-taking or the scratching of a guitar string, the battery will remain fiercely discrete and lyrics evoke the ethereal concepts like the soul, dream, peace or constellations. This careful scheduling a Japanese garden evokes very sanitized, which nothing would disturb the peace.
All this is nice but does not grow into the most extravagant enthusiasm: some titles, like the 33, well tu the abyss of emptiness, as a package rather delicate. If "Celestina III" is not likely to scare sensitive ears, it could quickly sink into sleepiness over time. A book in the bottom of relaxation after a stressful day!
