Next Clues reviews CII: Second Son by 17 Pygmies

17 PYGMIES
CII: SECOND SON [CD]
TRAKWERX RECORDS

17 Pygmies latest effort, Celestina, is a concept album (remember that term?) about a doomed space flight by a bunch of astronauts getting high on pure oxygen while exploring a giant gas nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. Really. Thematically, Celestina is loosely based upon the classic 15th century Latin novel La Celestina, a timeless tale of love and betrayal. Celestina is also a musical tribute to all of the unique 1950-60’s era science fiction motion pictures (think The Day The Earth Stood Still) and clearly reflects Jackson Del Rey's recent obsession with late night Twilight Zone repeats.

TRAKWERX RECORDS
2011
When Savage Republic came back to life in 2002 *, one of its founding members was missing: Jackson Del Rey, whose real name is Philip Drucker. Del Rey had founded a parallel group, 17 Pygmies, in 1982, continuing the adventure up Savage Republic Customs, the album recorded in Greece on the equipment loan in 1989. The discs 17 Pygmies are now quite difficult to find and navigate between surf music, post-punk, prog-rock, hip-hop, samba and techno: a range of largesse actually funny. To my surprise, I learned some time ago that Jackson Del Rey has not only kept the 17 Pygmies alive all this time, but also that its Pygs continued to be productive.

In 2008 an album was released, Celestina, I will not waste time you paint, because despite all my efforts and my talent brush in hand, I would never do better than the description that was used as a guide to anyone write anything about it:

17 Pygmies latest effort, Celestina, IS a concept album (Remember That term?) About a doomed space flight by a bunch of astronauts getting high on pure oxygen while exploring a giant gas nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia.Really. Thematically, loosely based upon Celestina IS the classic 15th century Latin novel La Celestina, a timeless tale of love and betrayal. Celestina est aussi a musical tribute to all of the unique 1950-60's era science fiction motion pictures (think The Day The Earth Stood Still) and light reflection Clearly Jackson Del Rey's recent obsession with late night repeats Twilight Zone.

It was actually that, the space rock poetry, an intergalactic journey in which nothing happened, or almost, and it was just fine. Relaxing, not any meteor shower to report. I love these discs that have absolutely nothing to please me but I can not help but listen more than reason, in remembering all along that I should hate them at the highest point. Celestina sometimes like a Portishead would have discovered that A Saucerful Of Secrets, for singing the songs on which Meg Margyatt keyboardist, or the B-side of David Bowie's Low, that is to say, the Brian Eno that does everything that his music is unobtrusive for those who remained instrumental (and tended to please me the most).

Three years later comes the direct result of Celestina, Second Son. Of Celestina, the pieces were numbered, Roman, from I to XI, and are finally delivered to the Celestina XII to XXII. We will certainly continue in an infinite space, an expanding universe, except that suddenly this exploration of the cosmos tends to take far less on my little one. Probably because the instrumentation is even more refined than Celestina, and this time we believe that Jarboe has found some lp's of Amon Düül and Tangerine Dream in his attic. Dust of stars, we went to interstellar space. It's always quiet and beautiful, poetic and air, often led by a piano (which tends to break me the menu, but shhh), sometimes in the background of interventions noticed R2-D2, but not as captivating Celestina that (in my case, maybe your great-aunt would think otherwise), which was a much better alternative soundtrack to 2001, A Space Odyssey. If you like hovering weightless and you have one day the opportunity to choose between the two, I would say "rather than Celestina Second Son", but hey, the two go well together now, with confidence to prepare the next missions NASA. Once we discover extraterrestrial life within 12 light years, it all starts to stop listening to anything other than Man Or Astro-man?, Ok?

The package that included Celestina was particularly beautiful, and the Second Son is even more so. The pouch is sealed on the back, the CD is enclosed in this material which are made costumes of astronauts, and inside there is also a booklet, Celestina Short Story (Part Two), a story written by Jackson Del Rey .Celestina did not meet but Captain Major Tom Mora, who with Isabel, the rascals, have come through a black hole (with success).

* It was for the second edition of Beyond The Pale, a festival held in San Francisco by Neurosis and Neurot Records.

BLOW UP reviews "Adrenalin" by Cult With No Name

POP ENNUI

CULT WITH NO NAME Adrenalin • CD Trakwerx

[www.

(7) Stefano I. Bianchi

A career and hidden side, the duo formed by London and Jon Erik Stein Boux, both rhythmic piano and voice, who publish the small former Savage Republic Trakwerx Jackson Del Rey, and curious fact that so far come out for a label accentuated when their 'Englishness' portrebbe will make a true "cult with a name" in the homeland. Their songs are fragile, and very simple schletriche, crossed by shadowy and melancholy moods, all based on drums, classical piano and voices of crooners in the middle between the Pet Shop Boys and Coldplay. It does not matter so much the structural form of the pieces, certamenta easy listening, but never so in reality they can be thought of as pop radio, because they can draw the picture, the mood relaxed and very intimate, very intimate and relaxed at times, sometimes vaguely drama (the Way You're Looking At Me) but never bombastic or over the right. This time the songs are much guess what happened in previous albums, the pop could be enough to bring the pair to sunlight. (7) Stephen I. White

AMBIENT SCI-FI

17 PYGMIES CII: Second Son • /CD • Trakwerx [www.

AMBIENT SCI-FI

17 Pygmies CII: Second Son • / • CDs Trakwerx [www.Trakwerx.com / label.htm] • 11t-44: 37

Back to the band by Philip Drucker aka Jackson Del Rey (one of the columns of the original Savage Republic) with the second part of the album "Celestina" a few years ago, a concept related to a science fiction story as a booklet included in the package that always como, and implemented with a great taste and limited edition artisan signed. The natural propensity to become film soundtrack (Del Rey and His acolytes have published several of their return, and all of Ecclesia faturra) is heard once again in a sound very difficult to place in the Conon not only - of course - Savage Republic 17 but also Pygmies, synthetic keyboards rule over everything else (piano, guitar, bass, some percussion) with a mood of '50s sci-fi implications hour by hour classical Hollywood, and occasionally more dark and ominous (but The moments are best). The voice of Meg Mryatt fairy for good luck because it rarely feels lucky he feels is only rarely because it serves only to bring attention to the idea of 'song' does not appropriatissima in music that shows some pages of memory allla Tangerine Dream is the classic "Forbidden Planet" by Louis and Bebe Barron. Italian webzine Arlequins reviews "CII: Second Son" by 17 Pygmies

Arlequins review (in Italian) - click HERE

COS'E' ARLEQUINS

Below you can read the google English translation:

This is the second chapter of space concept "Celestina," a three-volume saga that chronicles the adventures of a group of astronauts exploring a fault, probably a black hole in the constellation Cassiopeia (pictured on the cover of "Celestina" , published in 2008, instead telling the beginning of the story). The band has been around since 1982, although it has since gone through various permutations of line-up and some rest after a set period of activity from the beginning until 1989, producing several albums of various musical creed. Back at work today, which affects primarily cared for the art-work, complete with ribbons, glitter and a wax seal to close the box, it starts the story right where it left off with the previous album, starting with twelfth movement "Celestina XII" and ending, after eleven tracks, with "Celestina XXII", which is given the task to build a bridge to the new work that is yet to come. Captain Mora and his crew survived the leap into the black hole, they find themselves in a world very similar to ours, lit by only two and graced by lush vegetation. In this bucolic landscape, where time does not exist and everything is still, the pair of astronauts and composed by Robert Mora Isabel encounters a community of robots pacifists, lovers of literature and accustomed to the manufacture and use of psychotropic substances. From these robots our protagonists learn from a mystical message back to Earth, which of course you can discover by reading the beautiful and dense silver booklet that accompanies the work. The concept is explained in detail in narrative form, rather in contrast with the music, very thin, who paints mostly dilated and feeling and atmosphere is mostly devoid of vocals. The solo voice of Meg Maryatt, for example, you can appreciate in the second track "Celestina XIII", or "Celestina XVIII", is clear and reassuring, and runs smoothly on a musical texture as light as a breath of wind. I sang a few moments are the most structured with the style of a song itself, which boasts a light dress with veins pop prog and post rock. For the rest of the album is composed mostly of carpets of synth that are played by virtually all members of the group include, in addition to the aforementioned vocalists, including Jeff Brenneman (guitar and vocals), Dirk Doucette (drums, guitar , bass and vocals) and finally the real mind of the project, Jackson Del Rey (guitar, bass), creator of the concept and artistic director and producer. For completeness is that the line-up is enriched on three tracks, host Heather Lockie on viola. The range of sounds used is very symphonic, and perhaps why the band likes to call itself progressive, but there is actually a real rock backbone. The sounds, very atmospheric and meditative, seem to float in the air like a light iridescent powder made from the encounter with the rays of light and give an idea of the open space, something that is somehow suspended in time. Music is something indefinable and intangible, with electro-sensitive elements that can potentially provide a sound environment suitable for meditation and relaxation. The sounds are very beautiful even if you do not organize into real orchestra and everything points to the beauty of deep space and the brightness of the constellations. Reading the biography of Jackson Del Rey I noticed that the inspiration for this concept came about while he devoted himself to composing soundtracks for old silent films in black and white and the way the bottom is just that: a soundtrack that makes the background of the his story. In essence, the verdict is positive for this very nice, though very subtle contours and dashed with great delicacy. -Jessica Attene
